Buying Silver in Chicago
|
When you call, you will
speak with Mike and arrange for a convenient
date, time, and location to sell your gold.
Usually clients prefer to meet at a fast food
restaurant like McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts
because these are well lit, safe, public places.
You choose the best place near your home or
work, and Mike will drive to you! |
| When you meet with
Mike, he will sit down and
open his test kit. Inside he has a scale, a
stone to scratch the items against, and several
different acids to verify the purity of the
items. |
| Next, he takes out a small bottle of nitric
acid. There are several difference strengths of
acid for testing different silver purities. He
puts a small drop of acid on the scratch and
observes the reaction. |
| First,
Mike will use a 10x magnification
jeweler’s loupe to locate stamps on the jewelry.
Items are stamped as 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k, or
platinum. Once Mike identifies a stamp, he then
scratches the item on a black testing stone to
leave a line of golden residue. |
| If the acid stays completely clear, it means
that the item passed the test. So if the item
was stamped 14k, and the 14k acid stayed clear,
that item has passed the test. |
| If the scratch turns a reddish color, it
means the item is a lower purity than what was
stamped. For instance, a 14k stamped ring might
only be 12k. At this point, Mike would still buy
the item, but he would adjust the price
according to the actual purity of the item. If the scratch on the stone quickly fades
away, a weaker acid must be used. So if the
scratch mark from a 14k stamped bracelet fades
away, it means the item is a lower purity than
what it is stamped. Next Mike will test the item
with 10k acid. If it stays clear this time, it
means the item was actually 10k, even though it
was stamped 14k. |
| Sometimes, if
Mike suspects that an item is
not real gold, or has a heavy silver layering, a
deep scratch is filed into the item, and acid is
dropped directly on the piece. If it is not real
gold, it will begin to bubble and sizzle,
turning green, and giving off a nasty odor. This
item will be returned to the seller. |
| Next Mike will weigh your items on his digital
scale and show you the amount of grams so you
can verify the exact weight of your gold. Then,
he will calculate exactly 65% of the pure silver
value and multiply the price by how many grams
you have. The total amount is confirmed by you
and Mike. He pays you cash for your gold, and
the transaction is complete! Unfortunately, many pieces are stamped with
higher purities than what they are actually made
of in order to deceive buyers. Sometimes pieces
are stamped 14k or 18k that are not real silver at
all! Often, jewelry items are made out of simple
base metals such as copper, and then coated with
real silver in an effort to pass them off as real. |
